The Voice Choice really effects the spot, the presentation, the film. And we’re not just talking about a voice, we’re really talking about the personality we hear in the voice. The personality,
or attitude is what effects the listener’s impression of the message. Yet, often the Voice is the last piece of the project to be considered and sometimes not very much thought is put into choosing the right voice for the project.

Hiring a Voice Over performer who has been trained and experienced in the aspects of Voice Acting will make a big difference for YOU the client, in getting exactly what you want for your project.

But how do you direct a Voice Actor to deliver the kind of performance you’re looking for?   It’s not Memorex, It’s Live!    Oftentimes the performer is looking to you for input while you are looking to them to “read your mind! “ Perhaps this is the first time you’ve been in the position of directing a voice over and have no idea what to do.  Or, have you ever found yourself at a loss for words in trying to “describe” the feeling or attitude you wanted?   Maybe you’ve been in the situation where you chose someone from a Demo that had the “sound” you liked but once they were in the studio, they couldn’t deliver the goods.  What do you do then?  How can you save the session?

Here are some tips for “Directing the Voice Over Session”:

Establish rapport:
Make the talent feel welcome as soon
as they arrive. Chat a bit to make them
feel relaxed and part of the team.
Share Information:
Go over the script with them; show them
the video or storyboard.  Describe the
attitude or effect you’re trying to create.
Ask if they have any questions.
Explore their creativity:
Let them warm-up on mike, without any direction.
They won’t feel pressured and you’ll get an
instinctive interpretation of your script.
Record the warm-up:
Don’t tell them you’re recording. The first
take might be the best take of all!
Be specific in your directions:
Use visualizations and examples to further
define the semantics of the directives.
Give them positive Feedback:
Encourage them as well as critique.
